Abstract

The effect of phosphorus (13 kg/ha P) and nitrogen (60 kg/ha N) or the introduction of 4 perennial legumes (Macoptilium atropurpureum, Clitoria ternatea, Stylosanthes hamata and S. scabra) with and without phorphorus, was compared during 1983 and 1984 on the productivity of a 2-year old stand of Cenchrus ciliaris. The highest forage production was obtained from buffel grass planted with S. hamata and fertilised with phosphorus. S. hamata yielded 4 to 6 times more forage than the other legumes. Yield was increased 86% with phosphorus. S. hamata is a very promising legume to sow with buffel grass in the Bundelkhand region of India.
